The midterm elections that were held on November 6 saw Republican reign on the Congress come to a close as the Democrats won control of the House of Representatives. The crypto community also claimed a victory as two crypto friendly governors were elected.
Gavin Newsom Leads The Way
Gavin Newsom, a Democrat and longtime crypto enthusiast, managed to defeat John Cox of the Republican Party by 59 percent to become the new governor of California.
During his campaign, the former two-time mayor San Francisco received massive support from the crypto community. Notably, he collected $116,800 from the Winklevoss twins in campaign support.
Newsom used the donation from the two owners of the Gemini crypto exchange to launch his gubernatorial campaign. Even though the contribution was in fiat, the former mayor has been accepting bitcoin donations since 2014.
He has maintained a BitPay page where US citizens have been sending donations in Bitcoin (BTC) and Bitcoin Cash (BCH).
However, Newsom was not the only victorious crypto supporter from Tuesday’s mid-term elections.
Jared Polis, also a Democrat was also elected governor of Colorado after successfully managing to edge out Walker Stapleton a Republican. Polis beat Stapleton by six points.
Polis has been a long-standing blockchain supporter. In a campaign policy letter, he expresses his desire to make Colorado a hub for the blockchain technology.
“My goal is to establish Colorado as a national hub for blockchain innovation in business and government. I believe strong leadership will put Colorado at the forefront of innovation in this sector—encouraging companies to flock to the state and establishing government applications that save taxpayers money and create value for Colorado residents.”
Interestingly, In a tweet dated May 21, 2014, Gavin Newsom, congratulates Jared Polis for leading the way as a crypto champion. However, he challenges him to a competition that would see who between them raised the most Bitcoins in campaign donations. The tweet is believed to have been made about the time when Newsom was setting up his BitPay page.
