Innovative Partnership for Expanding Mobile Coverage in Mexico

Telefónica, a leading telecommunications company, is set to transform its mobile coverage in Mexico through a strategic partnership with Nova Labs, the creators of the Helium Network. Announced on January 24, this collaboration will see Telefónica leveraging Helium Mobile Hotspots to enhance its network coverage in Mexico City and Oaxaca. Helium’s hotspots, functioning as nodes, will provide extended wireless network coverage, particularly in remote areas. This integration of Helium’s decentralized network into Telefónica’s infrastructure is a significant step towards utilizing blockchain technology to reduce costs and improve network efficiency.

Benefits of Decentralized Network and User Experience

The adoption of Helium’s decentralized network by Telefónica aims to offer improved connectivity, especially during peak usage times. By offloading data traffic to the Helium ecosystem, users within the range of a Helium hotspot can seamlessly switch from Telefónica’s cellular network to the Helium network. This transition is expected to alleviate congestion in network connectivity. Users will be authenticated using their SIM cards, while Telefónica retains full control of client activities through its proprietary management system.

Telefónica’s Broader Commitment to Innovative Technologies

Telefónica’s Chief Wholesale Officer, José Haro, emphasized that this initiative in Mexico is crucial for evaluating the performance, customer satisfaction, and costs associated with this cooperative-based technology. If successful, Telefónica plans to integrate this solution into its mobile networks across various countries in the region. Operating under the brand Movistar in Mexico, Telefónica held a significant market share in 2022. The Spain-based company operates in over 17 countries in Europe and Central and South America, boasting over 272 million mobile users as of 2017.
In addition to this latest blockchain initiative, Telefónica has been actively involved in the Web3 space. The company enabled cryptocurrency payments in its online tech marketplace in September 2022, accepting Bitcoin, Ether, and USD Coin. Telefónica Tech, its technology division, has been engaged in developing and implementing blockchain solutions, demonstrating the company’s commitment to embracing emerging technologies and digital transformation.
