Kenya’s national exam agency, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC), has rolled out a blockchain-based verification system on Avalanche, securing more than 30 million academic records, the network announced Monday. The initiative aims to reduce forged certificates by allowing employers and universities to verify a credential’s authenticity directly rather than relying solely on paper documents. The platform is live, though neither organization has said how many schools, students, or employers are using it.

How KNEC’s On-Chain Verification Works

Under the new system, each academic record is anchored to Avalanche’s public blockchain, meaning a version of the certificate’s data lives on a ledger anyone can check, not just KNEC’s internal database. That is what makes the system harder to fake: altering a paper certificate does nothing to change what is already recorded on-chain, so the on-chain version becomes the reference point a verifier trusts instead of the physical document in front of them.

Avalanche described the initiative in its launch video as bringing tamper-proof e-certification to Kenya, positioning KNEC as one of its flagship government partnerships on the continent.

The network has pursued similar public-sector deployments elsewhere, making Kenya’s 30 million records one of its largest government data migrations yet. Avalanche has kept expanding its partnership roster this year, including its tie-up between Animoca Brands and Ava Labs.

Neither KNEC nor Avalanche has released figures on how many institutions have used the tool since launch. That gap matters because 30 million records only cut fraud if employers and universities start checking them, rather than accepting paper certificates the old way, and there is no public data yet showing that shift has begun.
