When is the next Bitcoin halving?
The next Bitcoin halving, the fifth, is expected around March 2028 at block 1,050,000; at the current pace that is March 8, 2028. It will cut the reward for mining a block from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC. Blocks have averaged 9.4 minutes recently, so the date moves a little as mining speeds up or slows down.
Block data: mempool.space.
What moves the Bitcoin price?
- Fixed supply and the halving. Only 21 million BTC will ever exist, and every halving cuts the rate of new supply in half. Past halvings were followed by large price swings, though the timing has never been the same twice.
- ETF and institutional flows. Spot Bitcoin ETFs buy and sell real BTC when investors add or withdraw money, so heavy inflows or outflows feed straight into demand.
- Interest rates and the dollar. Bitcoin tends to trade like a risk asset. Expectations of higher rates or a stronger US dollar usually weigh on it, and expectations of cuts usually help.
- Leverage and liquidations. Futures traders often borrow to increase their positions. A sharp move can force those positions to close, which pushes the price further in the same direction.
- News and sentiment. Regulation, exchange failures, hacks and large holders moving coins can change sentiment quickly, and the market trades every hour of every day.

Bitcoin trades around the clock on hundreds of markets, and its supply is fixed, so changes in demand move the price directly. The main drivers are money flowing into or out of spot Bitcoin ETFs, interest-rate expectations, the strength of the US dollar, leveraged positions being liquidated, and the four-year halving cycle.

This page updates itself. Prices, market data, the charts up to one year and the 90-day patterns come from CoinGecko and refresh every minute. The yearly history and the all-time chart use Bitstamp's BTC/USD daily candles.
