MoneyGram Launches Stablecoin-Backed Visa Card

MoneyGram has launched a stablecoin-backed Visa card that allows eligible customers to hold a stable-dollar balance and use it for everyday payments.

The virtual card is initially available in Colombia, with expansion into additional markets planned over the coming months. Customers can register through the MoneyGram app, manage their balance, and spend online or in stores wherever Visa is accepted. The card can also be added to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet for contactless and online payments.

MoneyGram plans to introduce a physical card in late 2026, adding ATM withdrawals and another payment option in places where digital cards aren’t widely accepted.

How the Card Works

MoneyGram announced the card on September 10. The card connects a stable-dollar balance held within the MoneyGram experience to Visa’s conventional merchant network, letting customers spend their balance without requiring merchants to accept stablecoins directly.

According to the official MoneyGram Card product page, customers can manage the virtual card inside the MoneyGram app, reviewing card activity and freezing or unfreezing the card without leaving the platform.

Customers can also access local currency by transferring funds to themselves and collecting the money from a participating MoneyGram location, joining a growing category surveyed in a roundup of the best crypto card options.

Table 1. MoneyGram Card Features and Rollout Plans

MoneyGram has not publicly identified the specific stablecoin supporting the balance. The announcement also did not disclose card fees, conversion spreads, spending limits, detailed eligibility requirements, or the next markets scheduled for launch.

Who Built the Infrastructure Behind It

Rain is providing the card infrastructure behind the product, specializing in connecting stablecoin balances with traditional payment networks. Crossmint is supplying wallet capabilities, while the Stellar network supports the blockchain component. MoneyGram already uses Stellar for parts of its stablecoin and cash-access infrastructure.

The arrangement separates the customer-facing product from the systems supporting it. MoneyGram manages the app, payment network, and cash-access connection, while Rain, Crossmint, Stellar, and Visa provide different parts of the card, wallet, blockchain, and merchant-payment infrastructure.

MoneyGram announced the card launch directly through its official X account:

Why This Goes Beyond a Standard Remittance Product

MoneyGram traditionally helps customers send and receive money across borders. The card extends that relationship beyond the original transfer by allowing recipients to retain a stable-dollar balance and spend it without withdrawing the full amount as cash, a shift that fits within the broader landscape of sending crypto remittances from the US to Latin America.

This model could be particularly relevant in markets where customers receive remittances in dollars but normally spend in another currency.

However, Visa acceptance does not eliminate every cost or risk. Customers must still review exchange rates, conversion spreads, card charges, transaction limits, custody arrangements, and the legal protections attached to their balances.

What Comes Next for the Rollout

The next development to watch will be MoneyGram’s selection of additional launch markets. The physical card rollout should also provide more information about ATM access, issuance terms, fees, and the relationship between stablecoin balances and local-currency withdrawals.

What this means for you: The MoneyGram Card could allow eligible recipients to hold and spend stable-dollar value without immediately converting the full balance into cash. Access is currently limited to Colombia, and customers should confirm the card’s fees, conversion terms, limits, and protections before using it.

This is not financial advice. Stablecoin-backed cards involve custody, conversion, regulatory, technology, and counterparty risks. Features and availability may vary by market.
