Deutsche Bank Plans 2026 Digital-Asset Custody Launch for Institutional Clients

Deutsche Bank announced on September 16, 2026 plans to launch a digital-asset custody solution for institutional and corporate clients in Europe, expanding the bank’s blockchain and tokenization capabilities.

According to Deutsche Bank’s announcement, the new service will initially support Bitcoin, Ether, and a limited set of stablecoins, including Circle’s USDC and EURC alongside EURAU, a euro token with a direct German regulatory connection. The bank will manage client wallets and private keys using warm and cold storage, with go-live subject to completion of regulatory checks.

Gerald Podobnik, co-head of Deutsche Bank’s Corporate Bank, said digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it, framing them as new rails coexisting with existing market infrastructure. The bank expects to onboard its first clients this year, with wider expansion into 2026.

What Deutsche Bank’s Custody Service Covers

Digital-asset custody lets financial institutions securely manage blockchain-based assets for clients. Unlike individual crypto wallets, institutional custody is designed around security controls, compliance processes, and integration with existing financial systems, a gap that has also shaped how BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF has changed institutional demand for regulated digital-asset access.

Potential customers include asset managers, hedge funds, custodians, brokers, sovereigns, and corporations. Deutsche Bank has not disclosed pricing or an exact launch date beyond targeting late 2026.

Taurus and Bitpanda Provide the Infrastructure Layer

The service builds on Deutsche Bank’s relationship with Taurus, a Swiss digital-asset infrastructure firm the bank has worked with since 2023 under a global custody and tokenization partnership, covering the same USDC stablecoin explained further in its no-hype breakdown.

Deutsche Bank did not name Bitpanda Technology Solutions in its September 16 announcement, though separate reporting confirms the bank is also working with the firm, since renamed Bitpanda Enterprise, on parts of the rollout.

The two already have a banking relationship, with Deutsche Bank providing Bitpanda users German IBANs and instant payment services since 2024.

Why Custody Infrastructure Matters for Institutional Adoption

Accessing digital assets requires more than connecting to blockchain networks. Banks need systems addressing custody, transaction controls, compliance, and operational security before offering these services institutionally.

Europe’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation lets credit institutions offer crypto-asset services under Article 60, encouraging banks like Deutsche Bank to enter custody rather than trading first. Standard Chartered launched a comparable service through its Zodia Custody subsidiary in 2023, positioning Deutsche Bank as a later entrant into an already competitive market.

Tokenization Is the Next Step, Not the Launch Product

Deutsche Bank’s approach focuses on infrastructure rather than operating as an exchange, centering on custody, tokenization, and blockchain-based financial applications, with tokenized instruments remaining on its roadmap as the asset range expands beyond the initial lineup.

The move reflects a broader shift among global banks exploring blockchain-based regulated markets, particularly as MiCA requires all crypto-asset service providers to obtain national authorization by mid-2026, pushing banks to secure licenses early.

What Still Needs to Happen Before Launch

The next step is completing Deutsche Bank’s regulatory checks and internal approval process before the platform goes live. The bank will need to finalize operational details, expand supported assets, and confirm client access requirements as the rollout progresses through 2026.

If adopted by institutional clients, the platform could provide another connection point between traditional banking systems and blockchain-based financial markets, joining a growing list of European banks moving into regulated custody as institutional demand grows.

What this means for you: Deutsche Bank’s planned digital-asset custody service shows how major financial institutions are building the infrastructure needed for digital assets and tokenized financial products to become part of mainstream finance. The immediate impact for individual users remains limited, since this launch targets institutional and corporate clients specifically, but it signals growing bank-level confidence in regulated digital-asset infrastructure.
