Barcelona Ready to Create a Blockchain Hub on its City Centre

There are different countries and nations that are starting to create crypto-friendly regulatory environments for blockchain-related business to settle their operations. This time, the Spanish city of Barcelona will create a specialized space for blockchain technology.

Barcelona’s Blockchain Hub

According to reports from the local newspaper La Vanguardia, there will be a tech building exclusively dedicated to investigate possible use cases of blockchain technology.

The blockchain building will consists of a construction of 400m2 that will be located near to Pier01, the headquarters of the Barcelona Tech City. The main company working in this campus will be the blockchain network called Alastria. Barcelona

Alastria is an association of more than 150 members that include important institutions like Caixabank, Sabadell, Endesa y Gas Natural a Eurecat, Forment del Treball, Indra, Inerdola, Mapfre, Orange, Repsol, Roca Salvatella, Scytl o Telefónica y universidades.

Additinally, the Spanish car manufacturing company, Seat will be providing electric vehicles to connect the different buildings of the Tech City. As reported by people related to the matter, the building will also host activities related to the gaming sector, smart city and mobility, and media.

This is not the first time that we hear that Spain wants to attract blockchain and cryptocurrency-related companies to its country. At UseTheBitcoin we wrote back in February that Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy was preparing possible tax breaks to attract blockchain investments.

There is a very competitive landscape all over the world. There are some countries like Singapore, Japan, Malta or Switzerland that are trying to become blockchain and crypto hubs. Other countries with stronger regulations and higher taxes, will be losing companies that will decide to move to these new hubs.

The lawmaker that is preparing the bill, Teodoro García Egea, explained that it is in Spain’s interest to attract these firms. Blockchain technology can be used in many different areas, including health care, financial industry, education, and transport.

With the new building that Barcelona is building, enterprises will be able to enjoy of an exclusive and dedicated blockchain centre.
