In Brisbane, Australia, the first cryptocurrency airport will open its doors. The Brisbane Airport (BNE) will now be a Bitcoin friendly airport. A start-up called TravelbyBit, a cryptocurrency payment system, will be the company that will be the link between customers and shops. With this implementation, other airports may follow and increase the amount of people using cryptocurrencies to travel.
Bitcoin, Dash and Ethereum
The intention is to transform the Brisbane Airport to be able to accept cryptocurrencies in all its shops. The main cryptocurrencies that will be supported by this airport will be Dash, Ethereum and Bitcoin. The company didn’t specify which ‘other’ cryptocurrencies will be available to be used there.
Some of the shops that will accept cryptocurrency payments are Windmill & Co, Forte Espresso, Australian Way, Merino Collection and many other important stores. This will allow travellers to feel the experience of using just cryptocurrencies inside the airport. Sometimes, while making a flight connection, it is difficult to pay or the banks do not provide the correct information about the rate of the exchange. That’s why, cryptocurrencies will allow multiple travellers to have a first positive contact with cryptocurrencies.
“Many people around the world have made money investing in cryptocurrencies and a lot of these people travel internationally, so it makes sense to offer a digital currency experience within our terminals,” told Roel Hellemons Brisbane Airport Corporation General Manager Strategic Planning and Development.
TravelbyBit has built a network of merchants in Brisbane that accept payments in cryptocurrencies. There are different businesses accepting these kind of payments, including luxury hotels and other restaurants and shops. The intention is to be the first airport promoting the use of cryptocurrencies. In this way, other airports may follow this decision.
Caleb Yeoh, CEO of TravelbyBit commented about Brisbane Airport incorporating cryptocurrency payments in its shops:
“Whenever you travel overseas you have to deal with multiple currencies and you never know the exchange rates the banks are charging you. Here at TravelbyBit we are promoting the Bitcoin travel movement. Digital currency for world-wide travel. It’s simple, safe and there’s no bank fees.”
