StarkWare, the organization behind the StarkNet blockchain, has walked back on a recent technical upgrade that rendered some users’ funds inaccessible. The move comes after a surge of complaints were posted on X (formerly known as Twitter), where users lamented that their crypto wallets were essentially emptied following the implementation of StarkNet’s 0.12.1 upgrade.

The issue predominantly impacted users who failed to update their Argent or Braavos wallets in time for the new StarkNet release. A Twitter user, @0xSisyphus, likened the situation to having money disappear from a traditional bank account due to not installing the latest software update.

Acknowledging the user’s frustration, StarkWare took corrective action by re-enabling the previous version of their upgrade, thereby allowing users to regain access to their locked funds. However, the company noted that due to technical constraints, it might take up to a day for the balances to be restored to the affected wallets.

It’s worth mentioning that StarkWare did issue a warning earlier in the month, urging users to update their wallets to avoid any issues. An August 7 post from StarkNet’s account on X had explicitly advised users to upgrade their wallets to ensure uninterrupted access to their funds.

The incident serves as a lesson in the importance of timely software updates in the fast-evolving landscape of blockchain and crypto but also underscores the need for companies like StarkWare to handle such transitions in a manner that minimally impacts their user base.
