Ethereum has moved above $2,600 after spending much of September struggling to hold above the level, bringing the $2,750 to $2,800 resistance zone into play.
The second-largest cryptocurrency by market capt cap reached roughly $2,668 during the latest rally and held around $2,640 afterward. Rising derivatives activity, stronger whale participation, and a return to positive US spot Ethereum exchange-traded fund (ETF) flows have supported the move.
The breakout still needs confirmation as ETH now needs to keep $2,600 to $2,616 as support. Holding that area would strengthen the path toward $2,800 and potentially $3,000, while a close back below it would raise the risk of another move into the previous September range.
Ethereum Breaks Above the September Range
Ethereum spent several weeks trading below resistance around $2,600 before finally pushing through the upper end of its range.

ETH reached about $2,668 during the latest move, its highest level since January, after struggling to hold rallies above $2,500.
The breakout follows a broader recovery from the September lows and places the previous resistance around $2,600 to $2,616 into focus as potential support.
| Level | Role |
| ~$2,390-$2,400 | Major range support |
| ~$2,530 | Previous breakout level |
| $2,600-$2,616 | Key breakout support |
| ~$2,640 | Current price area |
| ~$2,757 | First major resistance |
| ~$2,800 | Main upside test |
| ~$3,000 | Psychological resistance |
Table 1. Ethereum Key Support and Resistance Levels
A daily close above $2,616 would keep the breakout structure intact. A move back below $2,600 would weaken it and expose $2,530 again.
$2.75K to $2.8K Is the Next Major Test
Ethereum’s next major resistance begins around $2,750. ETH does not need to reach $3,000 immediately for the breakout to remain constructive.
The more important sequence is whether the market can establish support above the old $2,600 ceiling and then absorb selling between $2,750 and $2,800.
A sustained move through $2,800 would put $3,000 into play, and a rejection around $2,750 to $2,800 followed by a successful retest of $2,600 could still leave the broader breakout intact.
Ethereum Open Interest Reaches a Four-Month High
Ethereum derivatives activity has increased sharply alongside the price rally. Open interest (OI) reached approximately $31.48 billion, its highest level in around four months, according to CoinGlass data.

The long-to-short ratio also increased to around 1.065, while the weighted funding rate reached approximately 0.0098%.
Roughly $140 million in ETH short positions were liquidated between September 18 and 19 as the price moved higher.
Rising price alongside increasing open interest shows that traders are adding exposure during the breakout. It also increases liquidation risk if ETH abruptly loses $2,600, particularly if long positioning continues to rise.
Whale Activity Rises During the Breakout
Large Ethereum holders became more active as ETH moved through resistance.
Santiment data shows more whale transactions during the rally above $2,600. The crypto market intelligence platform also cited the number of non-empty Ethereum addresses reaching approximately 207.17 million.

However, whale transaction counts alone do not reveal whether large holders are accumulating or selling, as price action provides better confirmation.
If ETH stays above $2,600 while large-wallet activity remains elevated, buyers are absorbing the additional supply.
A quick reversal below the breakout level would instead suggest that some of the activity was distribution into strength.
Ethereum ETF Inflows Return After Three Days of Selling
US spot Ethereum ETF demand improved toward the end of the week. Ethereum ETFs recorded approximately $143.80 million in net inflows on September 18 after three consecutive sessions produced roughly $405.4 million in combined outflows. BlackRock’s ETHA accounted for around $114.3 million of the latest inflow.

The September 14 to September 18 week still finished with approximately $140 million in net outflows.
Friday’s inflow reversed part of the earlier withdrawals but did not fully offset the week’s selling.
Continued positive flows alongside price holding above $2,600 would give the breakout stronger spot-demand confirmation.
Another return to large outflows would leave more of the rally dependent on derivatives and short covering.
$3K Depends on ETH Holding the Breakout
Several of the current analyst projections point toward $3,000, but ETH still needs to clear intermediate resistance first.
The first level is approximately $2,750 to $2,800. Above that, $3,000 becomes the next major psychological barrier.
The route toward $3,000 therefore depends less on whether ETH briefly trades above $2,600 and more on whether the previous resistance zone can become support.
If ETH holds $2,600 and ETF demand remains positive while open interest grows at a controlled pace, both spot and derivatives markets would better confirm the breakout.
If ETH falls back below $2,600 while leverage remains elevated, long liquidations could accelerate the retracement toward $2,530.
| Scenario | Price Trigger | Possible Outcome |
| Bullish Case | ETH holds $2.6K and clears $2.75K-$2.8K | $3K becomes the next major target |
| Base Case | ETH remains between $2.6K and $2.8K | Breakout consolidates before another directional move |
| Bearish Case | ETH closes back below $2.6K | $2.53K and then $2.39K-$2.4K return to focus |

Bottom Line
Ethereum has broken through the resistance that capped price for much of September and is now trading above the range.
The breakout is supported by a four-month high in open interest, increased whale activity, low exchange reserves, and the return of positive ETF flows on September 18. However, full-week ETF flows remain negative, while rising leverage adds downside risk if ETH fails to hold the breakout.
The $2,600 to $2,616 zone is now the main support to watch. Holding it would keep $2,750 to $2,800 as the next target range.

Frequently Asked Questions
Need a refresher? Here are some common questions about Ethereum’s current price setup.
Why Did Ethereum Break Above $2,600?
Ethereum moved through resistance as derivatives activity increased, short positions were liquidated, and US spot ETF flows returned to positive territory. ETH had also spent several weeks consolidating beneath the level, making $2,600 an important breakout point.
What Is the Next Resistance for Ethereum?
The next resistance area is approximately $2,750 to $2,800. A sustained move above that zone would put the psychological $3,000 level back into focus.
Is Ethereum Open Interest Rising?
Yes. Ethereum open interest reached approximately $31.48 billion, its highest level in about four months. Rising open interest alongside rising price shows traders are adding positions, although it also increases liquidation risk if ETH reverses.
Are Ethereum ETF Flows Positive Again?
Ethereum ETFs recorded approximately $143.7 million in net inflows on September 18 after three consecutive outflow sessions. The full September 14 to September 18 week still ended with around $140 million in net outflows.
What Would Invalidate the Ethereum Breakout?
A sustained daily close below approximately $2,600 would weaken the breakout. That would put $2,530 back into focus first, followed by the larger support area around $2,390 to $2,400.
