ICC Partners with Near Foundation to Launch Web3 Fan Engagement App for 2023 Cricket World Cup

In a significant move to elevate fan engagement, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has collaborated with Near Foundation to introduce a Web3 fan engagement app during the 2023 Cricket World Cup in India. This innovative application is expected to captivate hundreds of millions of cricket enthusiasts throughout the six-week event.

Finn Bradshaw, ICC’s head of digital, and Chris Donovan, Near’s CEO, provided insights into the Web3 mobile app designed to enhance fan interaction during the prestigious cricket tournament. This app will enable fans to immerse themselves in prediction games involving strategic selections for ongoing matches. Fans’ points will be determined by their choices and the actual game outcomes, contributing to leaderboards and subsequent rewards.

ICC’s prior venture into Web3 involved FanCraze, a nonfungible token (NFT) platform initiated in 2022. It enabled fans to claim ownership of iconic moments from various ICC events. Bradshaw acknowledged the burgeoning community around FanCraze, fueling the council’s interest in exploring additional Web3 applications to amplify fans’ cricket fervor.

The partnership with Near was influenced by a mutual vision of leveraging Web3 technology to refine digital experiences for cricket aficionados. Near’s Blockchain Operating System’s capability to interoperate with other networks was an enticing feature.

Though Near operates on a layer-1 blockchain, its scalable infrastructure allows seamless interactions, smart contract executions, and transactions with diverse blockchain ecosystems. Donovan highlighted this adaptability as a potential asset for exploring an array of use cases throughout their partnership, which extends until December 2025.

The association of blockchain and Web3 with sports marketing and advertising has been instrumental in popularizing these technologies. With the Cricket World Cup hosted in India, a country where cricket is not just a sport but a passion, Donovan anticipates this collaboration to exemplify the practical applications of blockchain technology to a broad audience.

Near Foundation’s business development team, in concert with ICC, dedicated four months to investigate and pinpoint potential blockchain use cases for the Cricket World Cup. The tournament’s inaugural match is slated for October 5, with the grand finale unfolding on November 19.
