The 230 million users of Epic Games will now have access to the trading card game, which uses NFT cards.
Gods Unchained, a Web3 trading card game from Immutable Games, is now accessible to the 230 million users of the Epic Games Store, according to a June 21 statement.
Similar to Hearthstone or Magic: The Gathering Arena, Gods Unchained is a collectible trading card game where players can own and trade cards. The Ethereum layer-2 network Immutable X uses nonfungible tokens (NFTs) to represent each card. The game’s player base increased over the following two years after its June 2019 release, reaching 80,000 active players each week in January 2022.
Similar to Steam or GOG.com, The Epic Games Store is a website that distributes digital games. According to the March “2022 Year in Review” post by the company, over 230 million PC players utilize Epic Games to discover new games to play.
The Epic Games listing, according to Gods Unchained executive producer Daniel Paez, is a turning point in the development of the game. Gods Unchained’s debut on Epic Games Store, one of the biggest PC gaming marketplaces in the world, “is hard to overestimate,” he said. We are quite happy to show our game to a brand-new, incredibly large audience of devoted PC gamers and TCG fans.
The listing comes as Web3 companies fight off aggressive tactics from Steam, the biggest PC game distributor in the world. Age of Rust was removed off Steam in October 2021 as a result of the benefits that the game provided to owners of its NFTs. Steam also declared that Web3 games were not permitted on its platform.
Former members of the MetaMask team launched the Hyperplay competitor distribution platform in March to compete with Steam. With its own selection of Web3 games, Hyperplay also allows access to the Epic Games and GOG.com stores from within its user interface. The Hyperplay team raised $12 million on June 8 in order to advance the platform’s evolution and broaden its appeal.
