Sony Files Patent Application For In-Game NFTs

Sony Interactive Entertainment has submitted a patent application for NFTs (non-fungible tokens) to the World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO). The document was released on the 16th.

“NFT Framework for Transferring and Using Digital Assets Across Game Platforms” is the patent title. The application materials indicate that NFTs related to digital assets will be distributed based on the tasks a user completes in the game and that the NFTs will be used in other games.

The ownership of an NFT can be transferred to other users, who can then utilize that NFT in several games and platforms.

NFT applications include video game skins, artwork, avatars, weaponry, and even game characters’ skills.

Different platforms refer to the construction of NFTs in a standardized format that can be read across multiple game titles and video game platforms, such as PlayStation and Xbox.

Sony Interactive Entertainment submitted a patent application for NFT and blockchain technology to the WIPO in July 2021; it was denied because it could not “compose into a practical application.” It appears that it has once again applied for a patent on NFT.
