XRP supply and Ripple's escrow
All 100 billion XRP were created when the XRP Ledger launched in 2012; there is no mining. The small fee paid on every transaction is destroyed, so the total slowly shrinks: the ledger now holds 99.99 billion XRP. CoinGecko counts 63.35 billion XRP (63.35%) as circulating; most of the rest is held by Ripple, much of it in escrow. Ripple's escrow releases up to 1 billion XRP on the first day of each month, so the next release is on November 1, 2026.

What moves the XRP price?
- ETF and institutional flows. Spot XRP ETFs, trading in the US since November 2025, hold real XRP, so money flowing into or out of them changes demand directly.
- Ripple and the escrow. Ripple holds a large part of the supply. Up to 1 billion XRP leaves escrow on the first of each month, and how much Ripple sells or locks back up is watched closely.
- Regulation and court rulings. XRP moved sharply at each step of the SEC case against Ripple (2020 to 2025), and rules for crypto in the US and elsewhere still move the price.
- Bitcoin and the wider market. XRP usually moves in the same direction as Bitcoin and the rest of the crypto market, and it reacts to interest-rate expectations and the strength of the US dollar.
- Leverage and liquidations. Futures traders often borrow to increase their positions. A sharp move can force those positions to close, which pushes the price further in the same direction.
- XRP Ledger adoption. Payment partnerships, stablecoins such as Ripple's RLUSD and new XRP Ledger features can lift sentiment, though their effect on the price is hard to measure.
