Tezos (XTZ) had to stop block production for 90 minutes a few days ago. According to a Reddit post, the waiting time was between blocks at level 200703 and 200704. The situation was related to a glitch that affected the network.
Tezos Network Stops Block Production After Glitch
The Reddit user awa_cryptium_baker, wrote a post in which he explains what happened with the Tezos network. On November 23, the Tezos network stopped producing blocks for 90 minutes.
The post shows that the normal average time between blocks tends to be between 60 and 104 seconds. Apparently, the problem was related to a double baking instance that recently affected the network. There is a baker that holds the public key tz1KksC8RvjUWAbXYJuNrUbontHGor26Cztk that committed a safety fault at level 194934.
The Reddit user explained the situation as follows:
“The baker under the public key tz1KksC8RvjUWAbXYJuNrUbontHGor26Cztk committed a safety fault at level 194934, which was later denounced, causing the baker to lose security deposits, rewards, and fees.”
Awa_cryptium_baker wents on explaining that the security deposits corresponded to all the baking and endorsement slots until that height. As per the post, even if the baker committed only one conflicting signature the amount of the slots are slashed.
The Tezos network halted because bakers decided to shut down the initial baker for the rest of the cycle. Information spread that bakers stopped the active baking instances with the intention to stop double-bakings. Another denunciation was including slashing security deposits of the remaining blocks from the rest of the cycle.
The backer did not submit the nonces at the beginning of the next cycle. This is why the network stalled at level 200703. However, the state machine executed the functions to slash the rewards but it failed because there were no rewards left. The state machine did not know how to proceed after this situation.
“This is a bug or edge case to be fixed in future protocol releases,” reads the post. “The hot fix was to inject the nonce manually. This could have been done by the baker or by any other nodes, as long as the baker provided the value. The nonce was successfully injected and the network returned back to normal.”
At the time of writing, Tezos is the 19th largest virtual currency in the market. It has a market capitalization of $345 million dollars and each XTZ coin can be bought for $0.569 dollars.
