Vitalik Buterin published the second part of his series on cryptographic obfuscation protocols on July 28, introducing a new framework called Diamond iO. The Ethereum co-founder says the design could shrink the time it takes to run privacy-preserving code from a “universal-level” timescale down to something closer to “planet-level,” a claim he frames as a real step toward obfuscation that could be used, not just studied.
How Diamond iO Builds on Buterin’s Obfuscation Research
Diamond iO builds on Buterin’s earlier essay, where he called indistinguishability obfuscation, or iO, the “final boss of cryptography.” In that series, he explained that existing iO constructions were technically sound but would need runtimes longer than the age of the universe to finish, making them useless outside a lab.
The follow-up lays out how Diamond iO would work in practice. It runs on Fully Homomorphic Encryption inside a modified Attribute-Based Encryption scheme, letting a user interact with encrypted software while the program’s logic, code, and keys stay hidden. Buterin points to four possible uses: on-chain voting that tallies results without a central authority, applications that use private keys without exposing them, trustless software licensing, and AI or smart contract systems that can process sensitive data without leaking it.
Buterin is direct about the limits. Diamond iO still needs extensive research and peer review before anyone treats it as settled, and its heavy computational load and tight circuit depth limits mean it can only obfuscate relatively simple programs for now, not the complex smart contracts that would make it useful on Ethereum today.
What This Means for Ethereum Developers
If Diamond iO holds up under review, it gives Ethereum builders a path toward private, verifiable applications, things like anonymous voting or DeFi strategies that don’t leak trading logic, without leaning on a trusted middleman. Peer Review Will Decide if Diamond iO Holds Up
Buterin has framed this as an ongoing series, and the real test will be whether independent cryptographers can verify Diamond iO’s assumptions and push its computational costs down further. Watch for responses from academic cryptographers in the weeks following the July 28 post, since that peer feedback will determine whether Diamond iO moves from proposal to something builders can actually use.
What this means for you: If you’re new to Ethereum, this isn’t a product you can use today. It’s an early research proposal, not a launch, so there’s no app, token, or wallet feature tied to it yet. If Diamond iO survives peer review, the eventual payoff would be things like voting or DeFi apps that keep your activity private while still running on a public blockchain.
