The social media craze was once thought of as nothing but a simple fad. But we are now in the third decade of the new millennium, and young people are still using social media to communicate and even express themselves. That is why some people believe that it is important for these websites to allow the freedom of expression that so many have abandoned.

It is perhaps this interest in total freedom that has spurred the creation of Nostr and networks like it. Notes and Other Stuff Transmitted by Relays (NOSTR) is a social network for the digital age. The Nostr servers process communication data over a series of relays and apps, never once taking focus away from the network itself. It is an exciting new way to approach social media, and it is this phenomenon that we would like to explore in this text.

What is Nostr?

The concept of decentralization has really taken off recently. We need look no further than the crypto market itself, which now dominates the world of trade. But crypto exchanges are far from the only businesses that benefit from the growing popularity of cryptocurrency. The professionals at Casino Groups have noticed a marked increase in the number of casinos that now accept Bitcoin and Ethereum as valid transaction options. It has even come to a point where many operators are building their casinos on the foundation of a blockchain, leading to a true decentralized revolution in iGaming.

Nostr represents a similar shift happening across social media. Most communication platforms are built on the back of a company. Facebook and X.com, for example, are both companies first and social media platforms second. They allow people the option to express themselves, gain followers, and even connect with friends. But the price they pay is a portion of their data stored and then used by these companies for their own purposes.

Nostr is a platform designed to flip the whole dynamic on its head, a shift that fits into the broader move from Web2 to Web3 that’s reshaping how the internet handles ownership and data. Users get a private key that grants them access to a variety of apps. But the idea goes beyond a simple communications platform. Nostr’s philosophy is to fully reconstruct the modern idea of the internet. The goal seems to be creating a digital space that brings anonymity back to the forefront.

The Role of Zaps

The best way to think of zaps is as lightning-fast tips, an apt epithet considering that they are transmitted over the Lightning network. Zaps were introduced to the Nostr protocol with a document that has now become part of online history, NIP-57. The document describes what Zaps are and how they should be used going forward, and in doing so, it shapes what may be the future of the World Wide Web.

Zaps have enabled Nostr users to send feeless transactions at basically instantaneous speeds. But there are those that may wonder how a Zap works. The first step is getting a wallet that can support Zap transactions, and it’s worth getting familiar with common wallet security mistakes before linking one to your Nostr profile. Examples of such wallets include the Wallet of Satoshi, named after Bitcoin’s mysterious creator, and Alby. Then ensure that your Lightning address is linked to your Nostr profile, and you will unlock the ability to send and receive Zaps.

Why Choose Nostr?

Learning about Nostr and zaps is only the first step in truly understanding why so many people seem enamored by this new concept. To understand why someone would opt for Nostr, one must first understand why online anonymity is so important to so many people. We have seen a recent trend in governments cracking down on freedom of speech and freedom of expression on the internet. The United Kingdom’s recent social media ban is only one example of a trend taking place worldwide.

Nostr is the antithesis to this crackdown and limitation of expression. Users of Nostr are each given a private key to access their information. That means that in order to access your Nostr profile, you won’t need to put down your phone, an email, or any other private information. This is an invaluable feature in countries where privacy is under attack. Users who value their online anonymity are naturally flocking to Nostr for this reason alone.

There is another reason why Nostr might appeal to customers in an era when censorship is rampant. The content on Nostr is ungated due to the lack of network-wide moderation. Individual users can block or mute the content that they don’t like. But no content will be removed by a moderation team for offending sensibilities. Because of this impressive feature, Nostr is not just censorship-resistant, but almost impervious. The goal of the platform is, after all, to encourage expression.

Bitcoin Instead of Likes

We finally come to the matter of using Bitcoin as a form of social media currency. Anyone who uses popular social media apps is aware of what this refers to. Whether we call it “likes,” “hearts,” or “favorites,” social media currency is a term to describe the notes of approval that users get on their social media profiles. Nostr takes this concept a step further, allowing users to actually send currency to the creator of an original post.

That is, in essence, what zaps are. Using the Lightning network, a Nostr user can tip someone for a post they enjoyed. But this is where it gets interesting. Nostr itself may not be a blockchain, but it certainly does utilize the Bitcoin network in unique ways. Clients can utilize the various layers of Bitcoin micropayments to send units of the cryptocurrency in the form of zaps. Thus, Bitcoin becomes a literal example of social media currency, perhaps the first of its kind.

Online content creation is now at an all-time high, with about 15% of the American population identifying themselves as professional content creators. Nostr gives creators a new way to earn in the field, since it allows them to make money directly off of their own content, rather than being forced to go through a middleman like X.com or YouTube. It opens new opportunities for the world of online entertainment.
