According to the local news source, Swissinfo.ch, Zug residents will take part in an important blockchain test vote later this month. The main intention is to test how the technology can be implemented in different real-life situations.Â
It is important to mention that it will be a small scale consultative vote that will be using the city0s eID system, set up in November 2017. At the moment, around 200 users will be able to vote using their smartphones downloading an existing uPort application to register.
Zug is the so called Swiss crypto-valley because it had a very open policy towards virtual currencies and blockchain technology companies. The main intention is to leverage these technological trends and show that it is possible to improve many different aspects of a city, including its political, economic and social sectors.
The vote will take place between June the 25th and July the 1st, and residents will have the chance to vote in the first municipal blockchain vote in Switzerland conducted via blockchain technology. The results is non-binding for city authorities but it could be taken as a pilot test for future implementation at a broader scale.
The questions are related about whether they are in favour of fireworks at the annual Lakeside Festival, and if they consider that the eID should be used to borrow books from the library or pay parking fees. Additionally, users will be asked about the future of the ID for regular referendum votes in the future.
The eID system has been implemented by the Swiss company Procivis. Additionally, a consortium of private enterprises, including Swiss Post, the Swiss Federal Railways and several banks, launched a national digital SwissID system, that will be also used by the stock exchange operator.
