Fat Taiwan Airline Accepts Bitcoin Payments for Plane Tickets

As cryptocurrencies expand, there are more shops and businesses accepting these virtual currencies. Now, the Taiwanese airline FAT Taiwan Inc., announced that it will start accepting bitcoin payments. That means that this will be the first airline operator in Taiwan to accept Bitcoin as a means of payment.

Fat Taiwan Accepts Bitcoin

According to the airline’s announcement, the company will start accepting cryptocurrencies for tickets and other travel services. The company is expected to become a pioneer in crypto adoption in the country aviation industry. By buying tickets with Bitcoin or another cryptocurrency, the customer will receive a discount for more than 20,000 flights.

Zhang Gangwei, Fat Taiwan president, explained that cryptocurrencies have a bright future and that the tourism sector will embrace them.

“The widespread use of cryptocurrency in various scenarios will usher in a new future for the airline business, lodging industry, OTA and the entire tourism sector. FAT is about to be the No. 1 in the industry to embrace cryptocurrency and blockchain technology,” said Mr Zhang Gangwei.

The airline connects different cities in Taiwan and various others in Asia, including Japan, South Korea or Thailand. Connexions to other countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia are available.

Airline Industry Supports Cryptocurrencies

Several airlines from all over the world started to accept cryptocurrency payments. For example, in 2014, Latvia’s AirBaltic was the first airline in the world to accept Bitcoin. Another European airline that accepted bitcoin was LOT Polish Airlines, but unfortunately in 2017 it stopped supporting it.

As we wrote at UseTheBitcoin Peach Aviation, an important Japanese airline is also working in order to accept Bitcoin payments for their tickets. Furthermore, the company is trying to introduce Bitcoin ATMs in different airport terminals and a bitcoin wallet.

Other important airlines, like Star Jets International, has started to accept bitcoin payments for private flights.

According to Star Jets International CEO, Ricky Sitomer, the company wants to offers its customers the possibility to use this method f payment:

“Bitcoin is becoming an increasingly accepted method of payment and we want our customers to have the flexibility to pay via that medium of exchange.”
