Cloudflare announced on August 4, 2026, that it is rolling out Cloudflare Wallets and a payment tool called cloudflare.pay, giving AI agents deployed on its network a stable identity and the ability to make purchases within limits set by their human owners. Cloudflare Wallet handle reservation opened the same day, with full onramping, offramping, and agent-spending features expected in the coming months.
CEO Matthew Prince said the shift toward agent-driven commerce means businesses need a reliable way to know who is behind an automated purchase before trust and real transactions can follow.
How the Wallet and Identity System Works
Each Cloudflare account will get a unique web address that acts as a stable ID, letting the account holder extend that identity to specific agents so a business receiving a request can see exactly who authorized it. A central Account Wallet holds stablecoins, and users can then assign smaller Virtual Wallets to individual agents for day-to-day spending, according to Cloudflare’s announcement.
Guardrails are built into every Virtual Wallet. Account holders can set a spending cap, restrict purchases to an approved merchant list, and cap the size of any single transaction an agent is allowed to make on its own.
The launch addresses a problem Cloudflare itself flags as a growing headache: AI agents that browse sites, query APIs, and buy things autonomously have become routine, but older bot-detection tools were built for search crawlers, not agents transacting on behalf of real people and companies.
Left with no reliable way to tell a legitimate agent from a bad actor, businesses have been stuck choosing between locking everything down or accepting the risk, according to Cloudflare.
Sorting Legitimate Agents From Bots at the Door
Sites that sell APIs, data, or digital content can now tell a paying agent from a bot trying to scrape free access, which matters for any business weighing whether to open its news feeds or paywalled content to automated traffic.
Companies already comfortable accepting stablecoins from human customers, the way DoorDash integrated stablecoin payments into its checkout, will find the same rails now extend to machine buyers.
The Path to Full Wallet and Agent-Spending Access
Wallet handle reservation is live now, but Cloudflare has not set an exact date for onramping, offramping, or agent-issued Virtual Wallets, saying only that those features arrive in the coming months. Anyone building on Cloudflare’s Monetization Gateway should watch for that rollout, since the company says it completes the two-sided payment system it is building for agent commerce.
What this means for you: If you use AI tools that browse the web or shop on your behalf, this is the infrastructure that will let them pay for things without handing over your card number. It also means more sites may start charging small fees per request instead of blocking automated traffic outright. Expect more platforms to announce similar agent-identity and payment systems over the next year as the shift accelerates.
