Crypto Narratives

Join our growing community

Key Takeaways

  • Crypto narratives are the stories and ideas that shape how people perceive and value cryptocurrencies. They can influence investor sentiment, market trends, and the adoption of new technologies.
  • These narratives can be based on technological advancements, socio-economic events, or individual motivations and can range from the promise of decentralization to the potential for financial inclusion.
  • It is important to approach crypto narratives critically and know the potential for hype or misinformation.

Bull runs are always preceded by crypto narratives that build over the bear market and are finally perfected right before the bull market begins. That is why bear markets often take longer than bull markets – building takes time.

In the 2021-2023 bear market, several niches and sectors have cropped up that seem like they will be spearheading the 2024-2025 bull run. Here are the top 5 crypto narratives you should explore for 2025.

Liquid Restaking Tokens (LRTs)

Restaking is simply staking your liquid-staked ETH (e.g., sTETH) and earning more yield by securing other networks and protocols. Data from Coingecko shows that the LRT Finance industry has grown to $710 million in market cap.

Through restaking, validators can earn more rewards, projects can get the security that would be very difficult to bootstrap, and the whole ecosystem becomes more interconnected and resilient.

However, restaking also comes with a rehypothecation risk, where an operator can (and most likely will) commit to multiple Active Validated Services (AVS) with the same ETH. The risk here is that if a slashing event happens, it can reduce the security levels of other AVSs. This can be fixed by refining “attributable security,” where security is specific to each AVS and will only be slashable by one AVS.

Examples of LRT finance protocols to explore include Renzo Protocol, EtherFi, EigenLayer, Puffer Finance, Restake Finance, and Kelp DAO.

Blockchain Modularity

Modularity means connected, and as such, blockchain modularity refers to the ability of blockchain networks to integrate permissionlessly using a simple relay design that allows any protocol or any blockchain to have day-one access to any data type.

Monolithic networks like the Ethereum mainnet are the opposite of modular blockchains. These networks comprise application-specific chains strung together by fragmented and insecure bridge networks.

The modular blockchain industry has a market cap of $1.746 billion, according to CoinGecko, with the potential to grow ten times its size.

Despite the advancements in blockchain modularity, there is a gaping hole in data transport, access, and feed configuration. More blockchains are coming up to cover these loopholes in modular blockchains, meaning the future of this industry can only be brighter.

The top blockchains to explore in modularity include SEDA Protocol, Saga, Celestia, Dymension, and Gelato Network.

Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN)

Decentralized physical network infrastructures (DePINs) use tokens to incentivize people to build real-world physical infrastructure networks, such as vehicle and ride-sharing, green energy farming, electrical vehicle charging, street mapping, connectivity, and health tracking.

The DePIN market currently sits at a whopping $18 billion, with Render Network being the largest DePIN protocol by market cap. Notably, there are more DePIN projects that exist in the crypto space, which we have covered below! 👇

Real World Asset (RWA) Tokenization

image 155

RWA stands for Real-World Assets, and ‘tokenization’ is a blanket term for moving these assets onto the blockchain. After tokenization, the assets become tradeable in crypto markets. This concept shines on BlackRock’s tokenized asset fund, launched on Ethereum in March 2024.

RWA Tokenization is currently expanding, with the industry growing to $5.8 billion as of July 2024, and is expected to be worth trillions of dollars in the future.

RWA tokenization is making waves because it is breaking new ground by bringing traditional assets into the digital realm. This enhances liquidity, expands investment opportunities across the crypto sector, and will revolutionize how we interact with real-world investments.

It is also worth noting that a new niche inside the RWA sector is budding, called the Machine RWA – Machine Real World Assets. Machine RWAs are tokens representing real machines or devices that earn money for their communities by offering goods and services. These may include machines like vehicles, charging stations, wind turbines, solar panels, smart farming equipment, and robots.

Top picks in the RWA sector include Mantra Chain, Ondo Finance, and Pendle.

Decentralized Science (DeSci)

Decentralized Science (DeSci) is a Web3 term involving scientific research. DeSci uses blockchain’s transparency, immutability, and decentralization to solve many issues in scientific research, making it more open, collaborative, and trustworthy.

Using DeSci, everyone can see and verify the data, removing any hidden agendas. The data is stored safely and cannot be tampered with due to the immutable nature of blockchains, and all research is available to everyone, not just those who can afford expensive journals.

The DeSci market has a $486 million market cap and is the smallest niche on this list. However, as scientific research picks up, this niche has the potential to become one of the largest.

Some topics under this crypto narrative include VitaDAO, ResearchHub, DATA LAKE, GenomesDAO, and OriginTrail.

Final Thoughts

As we gear up for 2025, the crypto market is buzzing with renewed optimism. New and current narratives are emerging, potentially driving the next bull run. These five themes are capturing investor interest and shaping their expectations for significant growth across various crypto assets and blockchain technologies in the coming months.
